The Institute for Oil Sands Innovation (IOSI) was formed in 2005 from a partnership between the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Engineering and Imperial Oil Resources Ltd. The number of partners grew to six the following year, and expanded to include 161 participants worldwide by 2013 ― the year the organization was renamed the Institute for Oil Sands Innovation (IOSI).
Role of IOSI
After a century of oil sands research and development, ‘adaptable’ best describes the efforts of researchers, entrepreneurs and industrialists who overcame numerous challenges and created new technologies to harness the oil sands. IOSI continues that tradition by combining several innovative approaches to research driven by the Institute’s Vision that will achieve:
“Oil sands operations with a reduced environmental footprint by minimizing water use, consuming less energy, lowering greenhouse gas and other emissions, yielding high quality products at lower cost.”
